I work with everyone regardless of age, experience or ability. Because of my love of functional movement, my ultimate goal is to get you moving (pain-free!) in the best patterns suited for your unique body. Self awareness is a huge part of our work together; you’ll notice I base exercises off of how they feel for you, not how they’re “supposed to look”. There’s nothing wrong with you to begin with, so there’s nothing to fix - just awareness to gain and learning to be done.

Everyone has different needs, so it really depends on the individual, however I do tend to begin with soft tissue work, followed by a series of muscle activations. Once the body is primed and ready for bigger moves, we’ll integrate the activated systems and start adding load and more complex movement. I always end with stretching to make sure your recovery is comfortable and quick.

A functional movement specialist’s focus is training the physical body to function well as a whole unit in order to perform everyday tasks without pain or dysfunction. They focus far less on how you look aesthetically, and more on how you feel in your body.

The benefit of my style of training is that there are no machines required. I may have you buy some simple tools like resistance bands and a foam roller, but it all depends on what I feel like you’ll need for your specific body.

The great news is that I have lots of experience working with women in every stage of life, especially women in middle age; you’re in good hands!
Exercise—especially weight and resistance training—helps reduce your risk of osteoporosis and heart disease, while regulating hormones and boosting your mood!

Many practitioners simply have you fill out a form, but I like to turn that into more of a conversation. By speaking face to face (even on Zoom!) we can get to know each other a bit better. The first 15 minutes will consist of average questions to understand your health history and needs. During the last portion, I’ll be asking you to perform some simple movements so I can get an idea of your range of motion, abilities etc. It’s important to remember, this is not a test! This time together will help me see how you move and what I can help you with; not to mention get a sense of each other’s personality :)

NO! I have worked with clients anywhere between the ages of 12 and 94; there is no wrong time to begin practicing functional movement. Because of my specific knowledge and experience, I’m confident in working with all ages and widely varying levels of ability.

I’ve begun working on a sliding scale, so please email me directly to discuss what will work best for you. I always recommend seeing me for a complimentary assessment before deciding wether or not you can afford to work with me. I’m in this industry to help people, and I strive to do so as best I can. Sometimes even a session or two can make a huge difference in the way you move on your own going forward!

As a Certified Somatic Educator, I’m privileged to help people understand themselves better as a whole and form a working relationship with their nervous system. I offer a trauma-informed space for you to be your full self; no need for masking here.
This entails practices involving breath, movement, touch and sound - the languages our bodies speak. Sometimes we’ll talk, other times we’ll move our bodies, engage in present moment process work or a number of other things! These sessions are highly intuitively led, like almost everything I do.
I’ve always been a deeply feeling person, and have recently discovered how integral my natural sensitivity is in helping my clients meet themselves deeply. As we learn to slow down and rediscover our bodies’ innate & sacred wisdom, we can live with more ease, joy and freedom!
Benefits of practicing Functional Movement with Ali
Physical and Mental Health
Exercising regularly has been proven to enhance the performance and comfort of our entire being. Yes, it requires energy to exercise, but it turns out exercising is how we can increase it! I have lots of energy-building tricks up my sleeve and I can’t wait to share them with you. Our bodies naturally want to stay moving, it’s what keeps us healthy in ALL ways; every system within us benefits from exercise. Picture a life with better sleep, more energy, elevated moods, pain-free joints and more; it IS absolutely possible. Of course, it’s also smart to be aware of the body’s natural cues and honoring them. One of my specialties is adapting each workout to serve your current energy level so we work with your nervous system, not against it.
Body awareness and agency
Learning from a skilled specialist like myself can help you to become more aware of your movement patterns, posture, and even the way you think. Many of my clients have found themselves to have a better relationship with their body and mind after working with me. Knowing you can rely on your own strength, stability and mobility is a liberating feeling and helps you build self esteem.
Longevity
One of the main reasons we exercise is to increase the time we have on this earth with our loved ones. Since our bodies are the vessels that carry our mind & soul, it’s in our best interest to take good care of them. Not only are we caring for ourselves when we exercise, but we’re also making sure we’ll be around with our families and friends as long as possible.
Decreased Risk of Falls
As the body ages, we naturally lose stability, bone density, muscle tone etc. Regular exercise can slow the process dramatically and therefore keeps us safe from falling and injuring ourselves. The older we get, the easier it is to lose our balance, so working important stabilizing muscles is a must. Being a dancer and yogi myself, balance is one of my favorite things to practice and teach! Let’s have fun learning to balance better together.
